Gjipe is the beach people mean when they say the Riviera still has wild corners. The sea opens at the mouth of a limestone canyon, and the cliffs make the bay feel hidden even when it is not empty.
Access is part of the experience. You can hike down from the parking area, arrive by boat from Dhërmi or Himarë, or attempt the rough track if your vehicle and nerves are suitable.
Go early, carry water, and leave before the afternoon heat if you are hiking back up.
Gjipe is where Albania's most spectacular canyon meets the Ionian — and the only way in is on foot or by boat.
Gjipe sits where the Gjipe Canyon meets the Ionian sea. The canyon is karst limestone — water cut through it over millions of years, creating the gorge that opens onto the small pebble beach at its mouth. The beach itself is the alluvial fan of the canyon stream. No road reaches it; you walk in along the canyon floor or down from the abandoned military base on the cliff above.
On the cliff above the beach are the ruins of a 16th-century Orthodox monastery — small, austere, abandoned since the early 20th century. Above the monastery, scattered along the ridgeline, are concrete bunkers from the Hoxha era. The two coexist on the same skyline. Both are the visible record of how this cove has been used by people who needed to be invisible from the sea — first monks, then border guards. The current visitors are visible from a long way off.
The walk in is the experience. The beach itself is just the reward.
