About QEPARO

Two Qeparos in one stop.

Qeparo comes in two layers: the lower beach village and the old stone village above it. Most travellers stop at the water and miss the better half.

The beach is calm and practical, while old Qeparo feels suspended on the hillside, with stone lanes, quiet houses, and wide views over the sea.

It is a good base if you want less noise than Himarë and easier access to Porto Palermo, Borsh, and the southern Riviera.

History & culture

Two villages, one above the other, four hundred years apart.

Qeparo comes in two layers: the lower beach village and the old stone village above it. Most travellers stop at the water and miss the better half.

Old Qeparo, on the hill

The old village of Qeparo (Qeparoi i Vjetër) is a Greek-speaking settlement of 17th- and 18th-century stone houses on the slope 200 metres above the modern coastal road. It is one of the seven Greek-speaking villages of the Himarë coast. The old church (Shën Dhimitri / Saint Demetrius) has 18th-century frescoes; the local cemetery has gravestones in both Greek and Albanian script going back at least 250 years. The village was substantially emptied during the 1991 emigration wave and is now slowly being reoccupied seasonally.

New Qeparo, on the beach

Below the old village, on the coastal strip, is the modern town — beach hotels, restaurants, the road. Most of the building is post-2000. The two Qeparos are visually distinct, demographically distinct, and culturally still partly separated, even though they are five minutes apart by car. Walk up to the old village in the evening; it is a different country.

Walk the lanes of the upper village at dusk. That is what makes Qeparo worth stopping for.
