How to approach the most famous mountain route in Albania without treating it like a casual walk.

The pass is beautiful, popular, and still a mountain crossing. Your trip will be better if you plan luggage, weather, cash, and transport before you arrive.

SECTION 01

The route

The classic crossing links Theth and Valbona over a high pass. It is usually a full-day hike, with steep sections, weather exposure, and long descents.

SECTION 02

Where to sleep

Use family guesthouses with half-board. Dinner, breakfast, and packed lunches matter because there are few normal services once you are on the trail.

SECTION 03

Transport

Shkoder is the usual staging city. Many travelers combine minibus, ferry, and guesthouse transfer rather than trying to force the entire loop by rental car.

SECTION 04

When to go

The best window is late June through September. Outside that, ask local operators about snow and trail condition rather than trusting old blog posts.

Useful notes
  • Carry cash; mountain ATMs are not part of the plan.
  • Download offline maps before leaving Shkoder.
  • Use a guide if you are not confident in mountain weather.
