How to order coffee like a local

Coffee is not just caffeine here. It is meeting, waiting, talking, watching, and doing business slowly.

Coffee is not just caffeine here. It is meeting, waiting, talking, watching, and doing business slowly.

To understand Albania, sit down for coffee without trying to turn it into a productivity break.

SECTION 01

The default

Espresso and macchiato are common. Turkish coffee appears more in homes and traditional places. In summer, iced coffee and cold drinks take over terraces.

SECTION 02

The tempo

A coffee can be quick, but it often is not. People use cafes as living rooms, meeting rooms, waiting rooms, and evening viewing platforms.

SECTION 03

The xhiro link

In many towns, coffee leads into xhiro: the early evening walk up and down the main street before dinner.

SECTION 04

How to behave

Do not rush the table if nobody else is rushing. Pay at the counter in some places, at the table in others. If unsure, ask.

Useful notes
  • Small cash helps.
  • Terrace seats are for staying.
  • A second coffee is normal.
