A practical guide to the small coves, bigger bases, and road-trip stops between Vlore and Sarande.

Think in bases and stops: Himare or Dhermi for a few nights, Ksamil for the islands, Borsh and Lukove for space, and Gjipe or Porto Palermo for a memorable detour.

SECTION 01

Best bases

Himare is the easiest Riviera base for balance: beaches, food, boat trips, and access to Gjipe, Porto Palermo, Qeparo, and Dhermi. Dhermi is more polished and more energetic in peak season.

SECTION 02

Small beaches

Gjipe, Jal, Bunec, Lukove, and the coves near Qeparo are the reason to drive. They are not always easy by bus, and that is part of why they still feel smaller.

SECTION 03

Ksamil reality check

The water is exceptional, but July and August are crowded. Go early, pay attention to public beach sections, and use Butrint or Manastiri when you need space.

SECTION 04

Road rhythm

The coast road is slow, scenic, and better with stops. Do not plan it like a motorway. Leave time for viewpoints, swimming, and lunches that run long.

Useful notes
  • Carry water shoes; most beaches are pebble.
  • Bring cash for parking and loungers.
  • June and September are the sweet spot.
